YOUNG Scots endurance racers Sandy Mitchell and Finlay Hutchison will return to race action in Italy this weekend.

They will both be competing at the opening round of the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup at Imola.

Backed by Huntly-based Black Bull Scotch Whisky, Forfar 20-year-old Mitchell will fire up his Barwell Motorsport Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo, sharing the drive with former British Touring Car Championship race winner Rob Collard and Russian sportscar ace Leo Machitski.

Meanwhile, Dundonian Hutchison, also 20, will compete with the Haupt Racing Team in a Mercedes-AMG GT3, partnering team owner Hubert Haupt and Russian Sergey Afanasiev.

Hutchison should feel confident after an impressive start to his European Le Mans Series career at the famous Paul Ricard circuit in France last Sunday. He and team-mates Hunter Abbott and former title winner Jody Fannin claimed fourth spot in the GTE Class at the 4 Hours of Le Castellet.

Hutchison performed strongly in the distinctive yellow JMW Motorsport Ferrari F488 GTE EVO – running as high as third in class in the race.

He said afterwards: “I’m delighted to be back racing and the Ferrari is really nice to drive. I’ve really enjoyed working with the JMW guys, Jody and Hunter. It’s been a good start in ELMS, I’m looking forward to Spa in Belgium next month now.”

And talking about this weekend, Hutchison said: “It’s fantastic to be able to keep a programme going in GT World Challenge as well, and I’m looking forward to now doing the Endurance Cup again.”

Mitchell, meanwhile, is ready to step up to his new role as the only PRO driver in the team’s Pro-Am trio, as they head into the season-opening three-hour race contested by a daunting 46-car grid.

He said: “There are certainly a number of firsts coming up this weekend. It’s my first time carrying the PRO role in the car, it’ll be the first time I’ve shared a race car with Rob and Leo, and the first time I’ve raced at Imola.

“Both Rob and Leo have vast experience. We also know Barwell will once again provide an excellent, fast and reliable car. That package means we should be competitive right out of the box.”

Seasoned endurance racer Jonny Adam, from Kirkcaldy, is also lined up to drive an Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT3 with Garage 59.
