Nicola Sturgeon announces Aberdeen lockdown in attempt to control spread of virus

Nicola Sturgeon has ordered pubs and cafes to close in Aberdeen and imposed strict travel restrictions to control the "rapid" spread of coronavirus.

The First Minister announced a city-wide five-mile travel ban for leisure and recreation after 54 cases were linked to an outbreak at a bar.

All indoor and outdoor hospitality must close from 5pm in Aberdeen. Legislation is being drawn up to enforce the closures with penalties for breaches.

A household ban is also being imposed, meaning you cannot go to other people's houses in the city.

People outside the city are being told to avoid visiting, and restrictions might be extended to neighbouring Aberdeenshire if cases continue to rise.

At her regular briefing in Edinburgh, Sturgeon said: "The decisions are not being taken lightly but we are at a stage of this pandemic where strong action is necessary and sensible."

Hotel restaurants can remain open to provide food for existing guests, and takeaway services can continue.

People can continue to travel for work, or education purposes. Visiting in hospitals and care homes will return to essential visits only.

Restrictions for people who had been "shielding" will not be put back in place.

The First Minister said 64 new cases of coronavirus were confirmed in Scotland over the past 24 hours - the biggest jump since lockdown.

Efforts to stamp out the Aberdeen cluster have been led by NHS Grampian since four cases were linked to a bar in the city.

The test and protect system has since found 54 cases. Sturgeon said 191 close contacts have been traced, but said the number will increase.

Of the Scottish total, 36 of the new daily cases are in the Grampian area but it is not clear how many are linked to Aberdeen.

Sturgeon said: "The last thing we want to do is to reimpose these restrictions but this outbreak is reminding us just how highly infectious Covid is.

"Our precautionary and careful judgement is that we need to take decisive action now, difficult as that undoubtedly is, in order to try to contain this outbreak and prevent further harm later on.

"As I said earlier, this is about doing all we can to ensure our children can return to schools next week."

She added: "Acting now, we judge, gives us the time and the space to protect the ability of our young people to return to education."

Schools are still expected to reopen in Aberdeen from August 11, as planned.

The First Minister said the changes will be reviewed in one week, when she hopes they could be removed, either in entirety or in part. But she said they could be extended beyond that seven-day period if necessary.

Health officials think the rise in cases has contributed to a greater fear there has been a "significant outbreak" in the city.

It follows an alarming spread of positive cases in the city which the First Minister said can be linked to at least 20 bars.

NHS Grampian confirmed a full list of more than 30 licensed premises which shows the potential spread goes beyond the city to pubs on the rural outskirts, Stonehaven 15 miles south, and a golf club 30 miles west.

The health board named 28 pubs and restaurants, and said visits were made to Aboyne, Deeside and Hazelhead golf clubs. Banks O’Dee Football Club in the city was also named.

Earlier this morning, only four bars in the area had been publicly linked to the virus. It started with a link to the Hawthorn Bar in the city. A customer who was at the pub also visited Soul Bar on Union Street on the same day.

Sibera Bar and Hotel revealed a customer with Covid visited on Saturday August 1. The Cock and Bull, near Balmedie just outside Aberdeen, announced they had a visit from a customer with Covid on Sunday evening.
