The Rangers pairing that can set Cedric Itten up for Ibrox success as Swiss hero backs striker

Switzerland legend Stephane Chapuisat insists Rangers have landed the complete striker in new boy Cedric Itten.

And he says the towering £2.5million frontman would be the perfect foil for Alfredo Morelos if the Colombian sticks around at Ibrox.

Chapuisat is a huge admirer of Itten after watching the emerging 23-year-old bag 20 goals for St Gallen to help them secure second place and their best Swiss Super League finish for 19 years.

Itten has also scored on his only two international outings with the first the winner against Georgia to book Switzerland’s place at Euro 2020.

He scored within six minutes of coming off the bench after replacing current Celtic target Albian Ajeti and Chapuisat would love to see his country’s two star strikers go head-to-head either side of the Old Firm divide.

Ajeti’s next move is still unclear after a frustrating season at West Ham following an £8m move from Basel with Neil Lennon reportedly holding talks with the player, also 23.

But Itten’s future in Glasgow is certain after penning a four-year deal to join Steven Gerrard ’s men along with Kemar Roofe.

Gerrard admitted the two new boys can play together but Chapuisat believes Itten would form a deadly pairing with Morelos in the unlikely scenario he remains at Ibrox.

Chapuisat is currently sporting director at Young Boys and watched Rangers closely after their two Europa League group clashes last season with Morelos scoring in both games.

The 51-year-old, who won the Champions League with Borussia Dortmund, told Record Sport : “Cedric is the complete striker. He can score with his head, both feet, is good in the box, can play with his back to goal and can play with a partner.

“I don’t know if Morelos will stay at Rangers but he could definitely play alongside him or alone depending on the system.

“I’m now at Young Boys so I watched Morelos last season when we played Rangers and his style and Itten’s could make them a perfect pairing.

“We had two good games last season. We won in Bern but it was a good fight and we drew 1-1 in Glasgow and having watched them I’m sure Cedric can play at that level as they play a similar style to St Gallen.

“He has good goalscoring qualities and in a good team I’m convinced he can achieve good things. It’s important he takes the next step which I hope is in Glasgow.

“Cedric has the qualities to succeed in Scotland because Rangers will dominate the majority of games in the league and if they can get a lot of crosses in then he is good in the box.

“The physical style won’t be a problem because he has the body to cope with that and he likes to be aggressive.

“I would say that he can play as a lone striker if that’s what the manager wants  from him.

“But he is more effective in that situation if you are playing an offensive style rather than on the counter attack which is of course very different.

“But he’s an interesting striker and we will see if he can make the next step.

“Liverpool’s Xherdan Shaqiri has probably been the best Swiss export in recent seasons but he’s more of a winger than striker.

“But last season Ajeti went to West Ham and he has been linked to Celtic recently.

“It would be very interesting to say the least for people in Switzerland if they ended up on rival sides in Glasgow.

“It’s difficult to say who is better but they are both scorers. Itten is taller and Ajeti is more physical and stronger.

“Ajeti did well at Basel but he’s had a difficult season in London and hasn’t played a lot but he’s a scorer.”

Itten is the first Swiss player to join Rangers since Philippe Senderos with the defender enduring a difficult time in Govan after he was sent off in a 5-1 Old Firm drubbing at Parkhead.

But he has also backed his compatriot to succeed where he failed by proving a success at Ibrox. He said: “Cedric’s had a very good couple of seasons with St Gallen, a very good up and coming young team.

“He’s done really well, scoring many goals, and has been integrated into the national team. It’s an interesting move for him and I wish him the best of luck.

“He’s a player who links up pretty well up front but he will have to adapt to the physical nature of the Premiership.

“But with the way Steven Gerrard wants to play I’m sure he’ll be a player who will fit in well in that system. St Gallen usually play with two up front and he links up the
play well.

“He’s a scorer and hopefully he does a good job for Rangers and I’m really happy for such a talented Swiss player to get a chance to play for a team like Rangers.”
